In America, there’s a sort of strange legend that’s grown up around our great entrepreneurs as “self made.”
NOTHING could be farther from the truth! Every time you study one of them, you realize they had built several advantages into their lives to create success. Don’t believe it? Well, let’s look at a few:
Ray Kroc had a firm understanding of the restaurant business when he walked into the first McDonalds to sell the owners a milkshake machine. Once he saw how they had created a system for success, he became a partner in the company and the rest is history.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wazniak learned a great deal about computers and refining the systems that run them in their early years at Atari and that knowledge led to success, years later, at Apple.
Howard Schultz honed his skills first with Xerox and later with Swedish drip coffee maker manufacturer Hammarplast before he ever went to work for – and later ran – the Starbucks corporation.
Each one was an “overnight success” and yet, each one labored and refined their knowledge for years before they became household names. Even Michael E. Gerber, author of The E-Myth Revisited and one of the most influential writers, speakers, and coaches in the entrepreneurial space for the last 45 years, used his own knowledge of sales and systems to create an entire industry to support small businesses.
Here’s the point – every one of us has knowledge, skills, and abilities that will support us in every one of our endeavors, no matter where and how we choose to expand our businesses and incomes.
Think about it like this: let’s say your goal is to invest in Self Storage facilities and replace your “career” income. Using that knowledge – whether it’s budgeting, accounting, customer service, or even truck driving (!), you can repurpose those skills to serve you in your new role as a self storage investor.
The key in all this? Belief in yourself. And through all of this, remember the quote from another “self-made” entrepreneur, Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
In the end, it doesn’t matter if you have millions in the bank – or pennies – the truth is this – you have the ability (and we have the tools) to make the switch from wherever you are today to a successful new start in self storage investing.
